Accessibility statement

The Library of Trinity College Dublin is committed to making its websites accessible to ensure that as many people as possible can use them, in accordance with the EU Web Accessibility Directive.

The electronic Legal Deposit Player is only partially compliant with this directive and with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.2 AA standard. In the interests of transparency, the statement below outlines the features of the player that are currently non compliant.

Electronic Legal Deposit Player (available on computers in our Library reading rooms)

This service is an interim solution for accessing electronic legal deposit content collected prior to October 2023 for all of the Legal Deposit Libraries (British Library; Bodleian Libraries; Cambridge University Library; National Library of Scotland; National Library of Wales; Trinity College Dublin).

Electronic legal deposit content is supplied by publishers and the Legal Deposit Libraries have no control over how accessible the content is. The accessibility regulations do not require us to manage these kinds of content, but if you have a problem with any of the content hosted on this player please contact us using the methods below and we will try to help.

Non-accessible content
  • The background and foreground colours do not have sufficient contrast. This doesn't meet WCAG 2.2 success criterion 1.4.3 Contrast (Minimum).
  • Screen readers may not identify non-English language text. This doesn't meet WCAG 2.2 success criterion (3.1.1 Language of Page).
  • Some ARIA labels are missing or have been used incorrectly making it hard for accessibility tools to navigate the website as button and menus are visible to screen readers. This fails WCAG 2.2 Success criterion 1.3.1 (Info and Relationships).
  • There are skipped heading levels throughout the player. This doesn't meet WCAG 2.2 success criterion 1.3.1 (Info and Relationships).
  • Navigation by keyboard only is limited, and some shortcut options are not functional. This doesn’t meet WCAG 2.2 success criterion 2.1.1 (Keyboard).
  • Not all content is visible unless the mouse is used – for example the Terms and Conditions page is only in focus if the mouse is on it. Visually impaired users have no way to know that they are not on the terms and conditions notice. This doesn’t meet WCAG 2.2 success criterion 1.4.13 (Content on Hover or Focus).
  • The electronic legal deposit content is supplied by publishers, and it may not be accessible. If you need to access the content in a different format please contact the Disability Service: askds@tcd.ie or telephone: 01 896 3111

Usability issues for all users
  1. The following buttons may be discoverable by assistive software but do not function:
    • Full Screen button
    • Home button
    • Bookmark button
    • Search function within the “EPub viewer”
  2. Whilst there is a printing button for EPubs, this function is currently not supported.

The player was last tested on 20 February 2025.

A new version of the player is being released in July 2025 and this statement will be updated at that point.
